Infographic Poster Design

Education poster about No. 2 Pencil

Overview

The goal of this project was to create a infographic from scratch. I did all my own research and photography for this project, and doing so forced me to analyze not only the visual, but also the informational side. This project was the closest thing to a research paper that I have ever done and it taught me to realize that every time we design we write a visual story.

Design Decisions

This design went through several iterations before I reached the final. One of the earliest design decisions that I made was which way to orient the pencil. Originally I thought I wanted it horizontal, however as I arranged the information I had gathered and thought about what I wanted to include, I realized that the information wouldn't fit horizontally. Vertically however, I was able to arrange the information around the pencil and highlight section of the pencil on either side. I gathered similar information to make the information somewhat consistent.

One of the biggest challenges I had during this project was making the leap to designing the facts and information about the pencil and not just how it looked. For information design, I found it was important to relate the information to other visual things that people could understand. It also included knowing how to map the information and group it in a way that was interesting and engaging to the reader.

Stylistically, I decided to use the pencil idea throughout the entire design, to make it look like the pencil itself had drawn the poster. This brought the poster together and helped immediately communicate to the viewer what the poster was about as well as providing character and interest.
